In comparison with its size, Ios has many beaches, all in all about 40! Thus, in spite of the many tourists that visit the island during high season, when the main beaches are almost always full, there is always the opportunity to escape in a remote beach. Most remote beaches are accessible only by boat.
Some of the most impressive beaches are:
Gialos: This is the beach with the easiest access. It is very close to the main port. The beach is beautiful and has shady trees. Close by there are restaurants, bars, cafeterias and groceries, as well as sports facilities.
Koubaras: The picturesque bay of Koubaras is only 30 minutes on foot from the port, but it is also reachable by bus from Ormos (the port). It is a beach with fine golden sand and deep clear waters. There restaurants and taverns close by. There is also a beach bar, famous for its unique cocktails. The number one choice for a great swim far from the noise and the crowds!
Mylopota: The biggest beach of Ios. It has 3km length, fine golden sand and very clean waters. It is awarded with Blue Flag. Very popular, with facilities and only 3km far from Chora.
Maganari: A bay in shoe shape. There are 5 small beaches with fine sand or small pebbles and deep, clear water. There are taverns, as well as some sports facilities. Accessible by boat and by bus.
Treis Ekklisies (Three Churches): Shortly before Maganari, you see this remote beach at the left side of the road. There is a small path leading to the beach. There is a skerry, while the waters are exceptionally clean.
St. Theodoti: One of the most beautiful beaches at the northeastern coast of the island, about 14km far from Chora. The secluded bay and the fine golden sand, the view of Heracleia and the picturesque sunrise, along with the small, traditional settlement, make it an ideal destination. Accessible by boat and by bus.
Psathi: Psathi bay is very close to St. Theodoti and has two wonderful beaches with pebbles and clear blue waters. The favorite place of surfers.
Kalamos: This beach is on the eastern coast of Ios, about 20km far from the port. It is shoe-shaped. It has fine sand and turquoise clear waters. For lovers of quietude and diving.
Plakes: Very close to the western side of Kalamos, you see the remote beaches Papa and Plakes. Plakes beach is not easily accessible. However, it is worth it, because of the fine white sand and the green-blue waters!
