Antiparos, a place full with long history and amazing natural beauty, is the most known among the small islands located opposite of the southwest part of Paros. It was known as "The Beautiful Oliaros", as the Phoenicians called it and which means "forest mountain".
Scientists believe that originally Paros and Antiparos were united but today the channel separating the two islands is 1200 meters wide and 5 meters deep. The access to Antiparos is very easy. From the port of Punta start small car ferries that make the trip in just 7 minutes and from the port of Parikia the crossing lasts 40 minutes by boat. The schedule from both ports is around the clock especially during the summer, making the transportation for the locals and the tourists very comfortable.
Before 1980, when the small car ferries didn't exist the trip was done only from the port of Punta just opposite of Antiparos, by the local fishermen and their small wooden boats. Of course at that time neither telephones were available so the person who was about to be transferred from Punta to Antiparos, in order to signal to the other side, had to open the blue door of the small church at the port, so that the fisherman on duty on the other side could see the dark spot instead of the blue door.
Although the island covers just, 38 square km and has minimal, though picturesque appearance, it includes numerous historical monuments, beautiful beaches all around and very friendly and hospitable people. The town of Antiparos, called also Kastro (Castle), is located on the northeastern part of the island and close to the largest part of the fertile land. The visitor can reach it, walking on the promenade on the right side of the port, along the nets and tools the fishermen lay next to their traditional wooden boats. In the middle lays, a low mountain called Profitis Ilias (Prophet Elias) and on the southeastern rises the mountain of Aghios Yiannis (Saint Jonh) where the famous caves of Antiparos are located, 177 meters above sea level and about 12km from Antiparos town and port. The road network is undeveloped and basically there is one road in good condition that connects the town with the caves, Aghios Georgios beach, where small hotels and rooms to let have been established, and Livadia area.
Over the past few years people are mainly engaged in professions related to tourism, which is really booming on the island. Although the tourist development has increased significantly over the last years and has influenced the traditional life and mentality of Antiparos, people are still occupied with older professions like fishing, farming and agriculture. Some of the products that Antiparos produces today but in much smaller amounts are grapes, oil, barley, oats, figs, cotton and wine. In Antiparos we find salt works and the subsoil is rich in iron, lead and zinc and in the past these raw materials were greatly exploited, though, not any more.
