Folegandros is the island of moderation. Folegandros is a small, oval-shaped island, with total length 13 kilometers and maximum width around 4 kilometers. One would say that it looks like divided into two almost equal parts, while at the gorge that is created, two bays are shaped: Plaka and Vathy. Although a rocky island, there are no high mountains. Its highest peak rises at 455 meters at Agios Eleftherios, and is followed by Merovigli, approximately 312 meters high. It lies between Milos and Sikinos, while it is located at the far south of the Cyclades Islands cluster. It belongs to the West Cyclades but is administratively subject to Syros. It is 104 nautical miles away from Piraeus and the duration of the journey by ferryboats is about 9 hours, when the itinerary goes through the West Cyclades whereas it can be up to 11 hours on the Paronaxia route. Of course there are routes with high-speed vessels that make the duration of the journey even shorter and easier.

Also, there is daily connection, once or twice a day, to Santorini, that lasts about 3.5 hours away. Also there is air access through Santorini when necessary, while there is a heliport that disposes of night landing systems.

On the island the road network is quite poor. There is only one central road, about 12 kilometers long that connects Karavostasi, Hora and Ano Meria, while there are other smaller branched roads that end up to beaches and settlements. Many beaches can be accessed only through paths or from the sea, with small vessels. The transportation is very frequent during the summer months and very rare during the winter.
