Sifnos belongs to the western group of Cyclades and is in the center of the triangle formed by the islands of Serifos, Kimolos and Antiparos. Through the centuries Sifnos has also been known as Akis, Merope, Sifano and Sifanto, but the name Sifnos is attributed to the son of the hero Sounios of Attica, in mythology called Sifnos. A second opinion is that the name comes from the adjective "sifno", which means empty, because of the numerous underground caves that the island has.

Sifnos is situated 75 nautical miles from Piraeus, is 74 square kilometers in area and its coast is up to 70 kilometers long with magnificent bays that make the island irresistible. In general it is a mountainous island with valleys planted with olive trees. The highest peak is Aghios Elias, in the center of the island, 680m in height.

There are daily connections to the mainland with ferry boats all year round and at least one per day. The duration of the trip is about 5 hours by ferries and in the summer by speed boat is about half the time. During the summer season Sifnos has boat connections to other islands in the Cyclades, like Paros, Naxos, Syros, Folegandros, Ios, Santorini and Crete via Milos. Off season the frequency of the boat schedules depends on the demand.
